Abomination - Character Development

This article is about a book I recently finished reading at school. It is called Abomination. The author is Robert Swindells and he really put some thought and cool plot twists in this book. I have written an essay about something that really stood out to me in the book. The main character Martha Dewhurst changes a lot in this book. Here I show some of the changes she has made.

______________________________________

Martha Dewhurst lives by the strict rules of her religion, The Righteous (A religious group in the book). She is getting beaten at home and at school. She doesn’t feel normal and she doesn’t fit in. She takes the path of rebellion and the secret of ‘abomination’ is slowly exposed. This essay shows the evolution and how Martha is becoming a more confident, happy and free person.

The first example of this happening is Martha’s friendship with Scott (Scott is Martha’s new friend). It makes her feel what it’s like being normal. She wants this normal life and decides that she doesn’t want to be controlled by her religion. For instance…  “I was home from Scott’s at five past eight… I checked on Abomination (Abomination is the code name that is given to Martha’s brother. He is locked in a cage at Martha’s house.), then continued my campaign of rebellion with an hour of Radio One.” Chapter 29. Martha knows that she is prohibited to listen to pop music, but she still listens to it because she is feeling more rebellious and sees that the Righteous and her parents are forcing her to do wrong things.

The second case is when Martha looks up to her big sister, Mary and tries to be like her. The fact that Martha thought that Mary was sent away by her Father, but Mary was rebellious and saw that their doing was wrong and left the house. Martha’s thoughts of her sister that she never met, inspired her to be more like her. This text shows her admiration for Mary “Oh, yes. She was braver than, me. She used to stay out, see boys. I don’t remember much about it really. Father sent her away when I was six.” Chapter 18. She explains to Scott that Mary was rebellious and didn’t like to follow the Righteous rules. Martha then said that Mary got sent away because of her misbehaviour. She wants to get out, but she is too young and is scared to do so.

Asda, the third demonstration of Martha breaking out of her shell. Martha is instructed to go to Asda (the supermarket) by herself. At school, Scott persuades Martha to go to Asda with her. Martha knew inside that this was disobeying her parent's rules. She still accepts because inside, she truly doesn’t like being restricted by her parents. Here, it shows where Martha is different from Scott. Martha doesn’t know the true reason Scott asked to come with her. “When I went to skip the sweets and biscuits aisle he yelled, ‘Best bit coming up!’, grabbed my arm and steered me and the trolley into it.” The text is written very well and shows emotion variation. Martha is constantly scared if someone from the Righteous sees her. Then it says that she doesn’t care if someone sees her and she runs off with Scott buying sweets and treats, left, right and centre. This short text shows how Scott influences Martha into being more relaxed and cheerful.

Concluding this concept of Martha becoming a more self-respected person, I can say that, during the process of making friends with Scott she finds the perspective of living as a normal child. She begins to realise that what her parents are doing isn’t right. Her true child instincts slowly creep out and she starts to rebel. Scott and Mary are a real inspiration to Martha. They signal to her to wake up and become conscious of what she and her parents are contributing to. Ultimately, we can observe that from a shy, terrified child she has become a more social and proactive child. Martha has mixed feelings now. She feels sorry for her parents and happy for new her life with Mary. I wonder what awaits Martha in the future, as she is a whole new person.
