Some people try to gain recognition in society by borrowing widely accepted industry terms, but this can lead to two problems. First, this approach assumes that we are clear about what work we should be doing, but this is often not the case. It's not that buildings and bridges won't collapse, but they do so much less frequently than our programs crash, so it's unfair to compare them to engineers. Second, a cursory observation reveals that this analogy is not valid. If we were to compare bridge construction to programming, we might find that the far bank is 50 meters further away than expected, the materials are granite instead of soil, and worst of all, we really wanted a highway bridge instead of a pedestrian one. Software development is not subject to the physical rules that constrain physical engineers and architects. In fact, what we strive to create must be flexible enough to adapt well and evolve according to user needs.
