The UK’s role of the international technology stage has this week been celebrated with the launch of the first London Tech Week by the captial’s mayor, Boris Johnson. The number of technology companies choosing to base themselves in London has grown significantly over the past 5 years, spurred on by the creation of the ‘Silicon Roundabout’ area around Old Street that has been designed to rival California’s Silicon Valley. New statistics this week have revealed that the technology sector in London and the South East is growing at faster rate than California, which is regarded by many as being the heartland of technological and startup innovation. London Tech Week is set to attract crowds in excess of 30,000 to over 200 events that will be staged over the week, confirming that despite being the first, this is an event that is being taken seriously by tech experts the world over.

It has been revealed that London now employs more people in the financial technology business than New York and Silicon Valley, making it the go-to place for businesses looking to improve their financial systems. Financial tech is a sector that is rapidly evolving with many of the trading decisions that would previously have been taken by humans now being made by computers, with complex mathematical algorithms forming the basis on which policies are developed by many banks and stock brokers. With finance being a global business, technologies developed in London are being utilised by financiers from Frankfurt to Shanghai and with banks’ reliance on technology ever growing, this industry will only continue to develop. With London leading the pack, this means that we can expect constant and consistent demand for skilled tech workers in the city.

The reasoning behind London Tech Week is pretty clear, to promote London as a place for new technology start-ups and for investment to support these. It is claimed that 27% of all new jobs in the last 3 years have been provided by the technology industry, but this statistic is widely criticised; however, London does have a substantial claim with regarding to being the best home for new start-ups – DeepMind Technologies, a specialist in Artificial Intelligence, was recently acquired by Google for around £235 million. Although that figure might not be up there with the billion dollar figures we see emerging from Silicon Valley, it’s incredible by UK standards and it’s just the start – in the next decade London’s technology sector is predicted to deliver £12bn worth of economic activity and create 46,000 new jobs. And I don’t think anybody is going to turn a blind eye to potential figures like that.

Although Michael Moritz, the investor who backed Google, Yahoo!, PayPal and YouTube may have somewhat stabbed London Tech Week in the back during his speech by proclaiming that “in Silicon Valley, every week is tech week”, with 97 companies exhibiting and high growth figures for the next decade, technology is definitely going to be the driving force of the economy for the foreseeable future. Without significant investment in this sector, the UK could begin to fall behind other developed countries and nurturing start-ups now will let them go on to provide thousands of jobs and supporting the economy in the future.
